Love & Gelato OUR STORY

The Cianciosi family started our gelato business over 40 years ago in Rimini, Italy. Rimini is a popular beach vacation destination for many Europeans who come back year after year to enjoy the beautiful scenery and some of the most amazing food in the world. Our gelato is no exception!

Our story begins there in Rimini... I was a little boy, probably around 8 years old, when for the first time I made gelato with one of the best gelato makers in history. “Catta Effe” was a really old school, but also the best school to understand how to properly handle gelato.

While growing up, I worked for many years helping my family open and run Gelato shops, and my father taught me everything there is to know about the art of making gelato. He was an expert in his craft, using math and science to perfectly balance the ingredients.

After many years of studying, patience, and hard work, I was ready for something bigger. I opened my own gelato shop when I was 25 years old, and it was a really beautiful experience. I went on to open a total of three shops. Meanwhile I continued to study and strived to be innovative. As I, too, became an expert in my craft, I decided to share my knowledge with others.

About 10 years ago, I became a gelato and pastry teacher for an international company. I traveled to many different countries during my career as a teacher, and I helped open dozens of gelato and pastry shops. I’m very proud that I was able to teach the art of making gelato around the world -- and most of all, I’m proud to have honored my father, who was my first and most beloved teacher.

In 2017, I left Italy and moved to the United States after falling in love and marrying a lovely registered nurse named Racheal. I knew right away I wanted to share my love of gelato with my new Californian friends and neighbors, but opening a gelato shop was certainly going to be a challenge -- not a lot of Americans know what gelato is or have even heard of it.

I began making artisanal gelato in our kitchen, and Racheal shared some with her colleagues at the hospital. They loved it! Their reactions were so enthusiastic that we knew it was time to bring Filo’s Gelato to America.

As we started planning our business, we were overjoyed to find out we were expecting our first baby. Soon after, COVID-19 spread throughout California, and our plans for a gelato shop evolved into curbside delivery and pickup of homemade gelato, made fresh daily. It was a hit, and our service continues today as we add our gelato truck and catering options.

Our family traditions and history live on in every creamy bite of Filo’s Gelato. We are honored to share this delicious treat with our community and excited to bring a little bit of Italy home to America.

Cheers,
Filo Cianciosi
